Weekend at Simcoe's

Again sleep has managed to evade me. Not surprising, as I had slept in until 11 today and took a nap after returning from Simcoe. A tiny town, not even 20,000 people. I had confused it with Simcoe County, the community near Lake Simcoe. No, Simcoe the town is a little over an hour west of Toronto along the 403 (past Hamilton), and another half hour or so south of that, directly on the 24. I know this because I had to look it up and wrote it down -- "403, then 24". Which is not much help when you've been driving for a while and begin to wonder if you've missed your turning, an upsetting reality when you feel you might already be late to meet with your friends.

We crawled between a few bars, some of us nearly literally so. I had a great time, something about being a supposed cosmopolitan individual in a quaint, remote, time-forgot-about town. That's not quite true, as some big box stores, such as Shoppers Drug Mart and Pizza Pizza and the like, have apparently recently opened up there, giving it some familiarity to its otherwise tiny, quiet main street. Sure, I received many stares due to my asian-ness and get-up: I spent the earlier part of the day at Dufferin Mall, assembling a new outfit of entirely black clothing, inspired by Gary Numan's Replicas cover, the album of which I'd recently acquired on iTunes. The only slur I heard was "...Chinese Clint Eastwood..." which I did not at all take offense to.

Whoops.. got on a digression there, youtube leading me to Ultravox! I forgot about them... you may have as well. Certainly there's Dancing with tears in my eyes, but how about Vienna? Oh, I think I know my next iTunes purchase!

Ok... I guess there is more to say about Simcoe, but naught of it would interest you.

Sigh, still not yet sleepy! Trust me, I have tried to sleep but I only think of martial arts! A sure sign that I have not practised for a few days, much to my lament. But that's neither here not there -- no, during my shopping excursion I also picked up, I'm somewhat ashamed to say, the expansion pack for Titan Quest, which I've played a little of, though I have not tried the new area yet. No, I only wanted to see the new items and features that were introduced. A new inventory slot for Artifacts, items that you must find the recipe to and then can construct after having gathered (i.e. found via a random drop). There are also Scrolls, one time spells that can help you if you need a little extra something against particular tough areas/bosses. Right now I'm working on a Hunter/Nature character, specializing on the bow. I've kind of plateau'ed with my damage, and now I need to rethink how I'm going to face the Minotaur.

Ok, I think I'll return to my book -- am currently on the The Yellow Admiral, the 18th book of the Aubrey/Maturin series

OH! I almost forgot. I saw the Simpson's movie Friday night! It was pretty good, which is saying a lot. Yeah, pretty much a long Simpson's episode, but to me that's alright. Quotable, memorable, re-watchable.

And yet life goes on. In June we had a short visit to Montreal, packing in the usual sights and flavours, tempered by the heat and our own waning energy levels. We took great advantage of the hotel's pool, swimming a joy I never tire of, encouraging Sora to get more comfortable in the water. I didn't have much opportunity to pick out my old haunts but I could see that the city has grown since my days there, shimmering halcyon days full of youth and opportunity. Indeed every moment on the streets would bring waves of memories, of friends faded or forgotten, my head lost and spinning and trying to breathe it all in again. Obviously very different now but seeing it anew through Sora's eyes gave some fresh pleasure. We made the trip to the recently updated Biosphere, probably the highlight of the trip, the biomes living up to their names. April election, wiper story, tired of work

So the Liberals have won themselves a minority government. Or rather, the NDP, by offering lame, too-little-too-late alternatives, transferred their seats to them by people who desperately wanted to avoid having the country headed by the un-pretty hate machine that is Pierre Poilievre. I am not happy that the Liberals won but I am relieved that the Conservatives did not. However, knowing that 40% of the country wanted that unctuous cretin as leader is frankly rather alarming. Yes, the country needs real change but no-one was offering a positive one. Can Carney be pushed to alleviate the woes of his fellow countrymen? Seems doubtful -- a former banker who talks about " catalyz[ing] private investment ", which sounds a lot like subsidizing private development and is not exactly the medicine we're all looking for. Those of us who'd like Canada to avoid becoming another burning hellscape have our work cut out. I while back I wanted to mention that I had to get a new winds...

Dying, up close

In media people are portrayed as alert and cognizant right up to the moment they pass, able to give a final message to a loved one. Not so with my father, and I feel his death is more typical of the experience — a disinterest in watching or reading anything, increasingly jumbled speech, a loss of any appetite or thirst, just long periods of sleep. Finally a day or more of near-constant sleep, his heart beating slower and slower, until we turned away for a moment and he was gone. Though really he had been dying in varying degrees for weeks, his bodily performance a far cry from even a couple months before. It’s been over a month since the funeral  but the events leading up to it are still fresh in my mind, a history where my dad still lives, still has advice for me, still has smiles for his friends and family. My grief comes and goes, gradually trending to a melancholy, a deep sigh in my day. In truth I have been grieving these past few years as signs of my father’s end would appear...
