recovery update; shows I've been watching

I miss sleep. There were maybe one or two nights of uninterrupted sleep in August, but since leaving the hospital I haven't slept more than six hours at a time, and frequently only three or four before I get up in discomfort around my abdomen. I'm not sure if it's the lying down that aggravates things, or the staying still, but sleep, true restorative sleep, escapes me for now. You may think that I had a lot of free time in the hospital but it simply was not so -- I was constantly switching between pain and/or nausea, or had my mind clouded by Morphine or had eyes droopy with Gravol. In such states I could do very little but lay down until that fog would pass. Still, when the colitis symptoms were under control I did manage to watch a few of shows: Sword Art Online: Why do I keep going back to anime? Nostalgia for the halcyon days in university? To avoid having to engage my face-reading skills of real actors? In any case, overall I enjoyed the first season of SAO, with...

healthy yet

For my 41st birthday I went to see Taken 3 with the movie-buff crew. Well, at least we had lots to drink afterwards at the Town Crier Pub to help me forget the absolute misery, the horrific realization that we should live in the universe that has Taken 3 in it. On the Saturday following I saw Song of the Sea , a far better film that served to ease my recovering head. Which I followed up with drinks at a cowboy bar, and a go at the mechanical bull. So I guess I'm more willing to try things in 2015. I do try to listen to my body more, in that I am increasingly aware of the aches and wrinkles and blemishes that appear with disappointing frequency and intensity of late. My skin in particular seems drier (and itchier) than ever, reminding me of the husk I inhabit. I have kept up the karate, so that's something. I'm also reducing my overall drinking, the holiday season having now passed with its official ending being my mom's birthday. For that my sister and I prepar...

i have no idea

Why do I deny myself sleep? It's a funny thing, that I should act so. When that time in the night approaches, my procrastination increases. A routine, what I need is a routine! Not tonight, perhaps, but some time soon I'll find one. Seems like I am always sleeping too little or too much; never am I feeling rested and ready in the morning. True, my addiction to caffeine plays some part but there are good and bad days, regardless of my access to coffee. Movies! I've seen a few: I got around to seeing Drive  and immediately loved it. Quiet hero gets involved with a young mother, is forced into a difficult situation, chooses to do what it takes to save her. Composure and blood is lost. Great soundtrack . Oblivion , while visually beautiful, was full of dumb ideas. The premise and reveal didn't make sense, horrific and profound as they may have been. It was just too too much. The film would be much improved if they cut out the voice-over, though even then there's th...

it's like having a manga in your mouth

Monday I woke up at 5:30 in the morning and my sleep hasn't been quite the same since. Well, nearly the same in that I haven't gotten to work early for quite a while. I do enjoy getting there early (a rare happenstance), before anyone else, my tasks rolling and everything in the zone. Ah, to sleep on time. An alarm to go to bed! Someday I may actually do it. Played a few ICCup games of StarCraft, did alright. My game has improved considerably, but I still need to practice my technical skills and micro. I've chosen Zerg as my race but the constant expanding and building is such a hassle, albeit a necessary one. It's seems obvious why so many players choose Protoss, with their simple, powerful units. Unfortunately I've only one friend at my level, but that's enough for us to both continue growing, building off the skills of the other. I've also been reading the Battle Angel Alita manga. Addictive and thankfully not that long. I like that it deal...

Not very Korean

It's no secret; I'm not a very good Korean. I can recognize the language and understand a handful of phrases (as spoken by my parents) but outside of that, nada. I don't keep up with Korean events, I have but one Korean friend, I'm almost indifferent to Korean food. The weird thing probably is that I'm almost proud of how un-Korean I am. On the other hand, I am... hmm, a little ashamed, do once in a while think about picking up a course or the like. So whenever I get a Korean spam e-mail it's as if someone is trying to guilt me into getting to know my, uh, heritage. I spent much of the weekend asleep. I did manage to watch a couple episodes of Freaks and Geeks , which I'm quite warming up to. Sorry, I kind of lost my thread of thought there -- started Wikipedia'ing Korea, then Aegukga, then Yi Sun-sin, then Turtle Ship, then Horatio Nelson, then "England expects that every man will do his duty". And now I find myself contemplated my death. Agai...

Can't sleep

Sleep! It evades me yet again! This time I woke up to troubling, irrational, senseless dreams. My body is humming and alive, and I want it to be quiet. I went to a karate class at a friend's school, and I worked out like I haven't in quite a while, my own school being temporarily closed for the summer. At least, I believe that's why my mind cannot sleep. I imagined that the phone was ringing, but I do think it could be so, that it was a trick of the psyche. In any case, here I am again, restless and surrounded by a thousand things undone.
